Earshot Jazz Festival opens today

Celebrating its 21st year, Seattle’s Earshot Jazz Festival offers three weeks of traditional and cutting-edge jazz from here and abroad.
Perhaps the most exotic is Turkish vocalist Saadet Turkoz, who performs Thursday at the Asian Art Museum.
The festival opens tonight with the Garfield High School Jazz Band (winner of the recent Essentially Ellington competition in New York City) and guest saxophonist Miguel Zenon, recent winner of a MacArthur Award. Shows are scheduled at 7 and 9:30 p.m. at the Triple Door. Tickets are $11-$22.

Among the performers at the festival are the Miguel Zenon Quintet, Tarbaby, Allen Toussaint Quartet, Matt Wilson Quartet, Han Bennink and 3rd Man, Trio 3, Greta Matassa, McTuff (featuring organist Joe Doria), Evan Flory-Barnes, The Chad McCullough Quintet and the Jim Knapp Orchestra. There’s also a film festival running Oct. 20 to Nov. 5.
