It’s time to dust off the poodle skirt and rock around the clock.
Seattle Symphony kicks off its 2009-2010 Pops Season with a “back to the ’50s” concert featuring Sha Na Na and the symphony under the direction of conductor and composer Marvin Hamlisch, who has won three Oscars, four Emmnys, four Grammys, a Tony and three Golden Globes.
Songs include “At the Hop,” “Blue Moon,” “The Peppermint Twist,” “La Bamba,” “Come Go With Me,” “In the Still of the Night,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ ” and other songs of the era.
The concerts are offered at 7:30 Sept. 17, 8 p.m. Sept. 18, 2 and 8 p.m. Sept. 19, and 2 p.m. Sept. 20 at Benaroya Hall. After the 8 p.m. performance Sept. 19, patrons are encouraged to wear ’50s costumes and kick off their saddle shoes at a doo-wop sock hop. There’s also a display of vintage cars.
Sha Na Na rose to fame after appearing right before Jimi Hendrix at the 1969 Woodstock Festival, which led to a record deal and a TV show that aired from 1977 to 1981. The group also portrayed Johnn Casino and the Gamblers in the movie musical “Grease.”
