KUBE 93’s Summer Jam 2009 is happening July 25 at the White River Amphitheatre.

Arena-rock throwdown in Kent

Fans of 1980s arena rock got a big treat Wednesday night at Kent’s ShoWare Center, where Styx, REO Speedwagon and .38 Special performed a powerful, eye-popping show.
Longtime fans of the three veteran rock bands jammed bars and restaurants at the Kent Commons mall before the show, adding to the celebratory mood.

Veritas joins VAST at Studio Seven

Masters of an ancient instrument

The Yoshida Brothers, Ryoichiro and Kenichi, play an ancient three-stringed instrument called a tsugaru-shamisen, which originated in China in the 16th century.
The Hokkaido natives have practically reinvented the instrument’s flinty traditional sounds with a powerful blend of rock, pop, classical and world-music styles. Listen to a sample of the duo’s music here.

Northwest Folklife opens Friday

This year’s Northwest Folklife Festival, which is expected to attract about 250,000 visitors, opens Friday at Seattle Center for four days of live performances.
Admission is free, but Folklife welcomes donations of $10 a day for individuals and $20 a day for families.
